Invincible is the second book in the chronicles of Nick novels. The first book, Infinity, was a good book and it had a great plot, but it didn't really have that "WOW!" effect. Now, moving onto Invincible, I regret my reluctance to carry on with the series. Sherrilyn Kenyon is a great writer, there is no doubt in my mind about that now; she gives detail and depth to her characters, plot, etc and I'm impressed. I usually don't enjoy reading books from a guy's point of view, mainly because it's a lot harder to relate to(I suspect this is because I am a girl), but Sherrilyn wrote it in a way that allowed you to relate to Nick, regardless of age or gender. I really liked the story-line of this book, it's not as fast-paced as I would have liked, but it is very interesting and it definitely pulls you in. It's got a nice detailed build up to the end and it's one of those books that you can keep reading until the end and you won't want to put it down. Sometimes the only good part about a book is the ending and everything before that is dull, which kind of ruins the story and makes the ending seem pointless compared to the long and boring build-up. I always liked Nick, I thought he was funny and my opinion hasn't changed, he's a really good choice for the main character and he is written very well. The other characters are the same, though Nick is a bit more interesting and charismatic than the other characters, they're still pretty interesting and undoubtedly work well with the plot. I am kind of bummed that there wasn't as much Bubba in this book, though; I really liked Bubba. Over-all, it is a really good book, nice detail and great characters. For anyone looking to start a new series, I definitely recommend this one. I don't think age or gender is a problem here, I think it will appeal to almost anyone, so I say go for it, it's a very easy book to like. |

Invincible is book two in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s young adult series the “Chronicles of Nick”, leading an alternative reality to the destiny taken by Nick Gautier in her adult ‘Dark Hunter’ series. As a fan of the adult series I’m finding the Chronicles of Nick an intriguing read, as it twists what we think we already know and fills in a few blanks at the same time. However, it is a very light series, and Invincible is no exception. Invincible relied on the reader having read the first book, as someone who doesn’t retain in-depth memories of the books I’ve read previously, I found this just as difficult to follow as someone who’d never read the previous book. Interrupting the plot to add in a side note about previous adventures in an attempt to bring the reader up to speed just served to slow the plot down. Nick is quite a delightful character in this, and his mum is still lovely, but one thing Ms Kenyon does well is build believable characters; whether they’re dark or light, they’re well crafted. Unfortunately, what Ms Kenyon doesn’t do so well is have a conclusive plot, and although we’re only two books into the series it’s already starting to add layer upon layer, building up to twists in the plot. We do have a basic story that is self contained in the book, but we’ve also got huge build up of the series arc happening, which makes me a little nervous about the length of the series. Overall, it’s a light read, a few sexual references and chaste kisses, but nothing indepth, it’s enjoyable, but probably not a re-read. |
